Wyatt King is a fourth grade student at Alexander Elementary, and is changing the world one pair of shoes at a time.

Two years ago, Wyatt’s mom challenged him find a way to give back. After visiting his mom at work and meeting Beverly Fraser, president and founder of the Fraser Memorial Foundation, Wyatt knew how he wanted to help the kids of Clarendon, Jamaica. Beverly had shown Wyatt pictures of Jamaican kids who weren’t wearing shoes during a sports day. When Wyatt asked why they weren’t wearing shoes, Beverly explained that not all families in Jamaica have the money to afford them. When Wyatt heard that, he wanted to help.

Wyatt collected close to 100 pairs of shoes during the first year of his fundraiser, Wyatt’s Big Give. Friends and family members donated shoes that they no longer wore or that they had grown out of. The shoes were dropped off at locations across the United States, including one at Alexander Elementary. After shoes are collected for the year, they are cleaned before making their way to their new owners in Jamaica.

Last December, Beverly traveled to Jamaica to deliver the first set of shoes to the kids of Clarendon. While she was there, she gave them a pep talk and described to them to work Wyatt had done. “I explained to them how this came about. I told them that this little boy saw the need and just ran with it,” she said. “They were all grateful so I challenged them that if one child in America can do this for you, you can find something in the community to help each other out.” Beverly is traveling back to Jamaica this month, and is looking forward to seeing how the kids have impacted their own community.

Wyatt’s principal, Heather McMahan, said Wyatt is “beyond his years” and a “superstar” student at Alexander. Not only do Wyatt and his family give back to the community, he also does a good job in all areas of school. “He and his family are wonderful. They are very philanthropic, and always wanting to figure out how they can do something for others, which is an incredible trait to have.”

During his two years of collecting shoes, Wyatt has sent about 230 pairs of shoes to Jamaica. Wyatt enjoys helping other people and will continue collecting shoes for the upcoming year. He also has a big goal for himself over the next five years. “I want to have 10,000 shoes collected when I get to high school.”
